Who we are

Placenta Accreta Scotland is Scotland’s only peer advocacy group for mums who have had experience of Placenta Accreta Spectrum. We aim to raise awareness of this rare, high-risk pregnancy complication, bringing together mums with this shared lived experience to offer peer support, whilst working supportively and progressively with NHS Scotland. We will collaborate with families, midwives, fetal medicine teams, obstetricians and psychologists to ensure mums feel informed and supported whilst striving for improved outcomes for mums and their babies.

A small group of PAS mums in Scotland are now in touch regularly. If you’ve gone through a Placenta Accreta Spectrum diagnosis, or if it’s been years after your surgery but you still feel like you could benefit from (or offer) peer support, then please get in touch at hello@placentaaccreta.scot

Emma Donnelly

Co - Founder

Emma is co-founder and lead of Placenta Accreta Scotland.

Emma was diagnosed with Placenta Accreta Spectrum in 2023. She found this an extremely isolating and terrifying time. Looking for information online, she found Placenta Accreta Ireland. She absorbed all their resources and listened to every Accreta & Me  podcast before contacting Placenta Accreta Ireland to say thank-you. As a result, she felt less alone and more informed. Emma and Naomi have been in touch ever since.

Emma wants to ensure that every mum facing this diagnosis feels supported and informed. She has since gone on to contribute to Placenta Accreta Ireland’s work by representing Scottish PAS mums in round table and panel discussions with other PAS mums and medics from around the world. She has shared her story on Placenta Accreta Ireland’s podcast, Accreta & Me, as well as on the Scottish Blood Transfusion Service.

Naomi Cooney

Naomi’s sister Ellie died in 2013 due to complications arising from PAS. She is a passionate and tireless advocate who works with medical colleagues and PAS mums with the aim of improving the experience a mum with PAS will have during her pregnancy and beyond. When Naomi and Prof Donal Brennan founded Placenta Accreta Ireland they shared a vision that mums diagnosed with this pregnancy complication would feel supported, informed and empowered.
